For those who have asked what goes on behind our coffee bar and roastery, we are finally putting it all down in writing. Whether you are a regular face or just discovered us, thanks for being interested in what we do. Here is a look at how we are working on sustainability and supporting our community.

Our approach to sustainability

Being coffee roasters and having a retail space there is potential for significant waste. I will discuss the coffee chain, from green coffee to retail in a later newsletter. But where does our byproduct from our play go?

  • We have almost no food waste. Scrapings go to our compost. Our coffee grounds are collected by Clarence from Jiwah for the gardens in South Eveleigh or by Topi Hill Organics for their farm in the Hinterland of Seal Rocks. They also take our coffee husks for composting.

  • Our retail range is packed in yellow bin recyclable bags. You do need to check your council, some councils have been very slow in catching on.

  • Our takeaway cups and food containers are industrial recyclable or compostable, or have been manufactured from bamboo and plant-based plastic.

  • Our coffee sacks are used as worm farm mats, blankets or weed mats. Our customers take these, there is a pile in our warehouse. Please help yourselves.

  • We offer a discount for customers using reusable cups or bringing in a container to take home our beans or teas.

  • We offer our wholesale customers refillable 5 or 10Kg tins. They can also take our yellow bin recyclable bags.

How we support our local community and initiatives

Our relationships with our community are obviously important. They are our customers, our staff and our locals. We also have relationships with grass roots-based organisations and initiatives whom we support with fundraising days once a year:

Story Factory

A not-for-profit creative writing centre for young people in under-resourced communities. They run programs in Sydney and digitally across Australia. Learn more

Cafe Smart

We are proud partners of Cafe Smart, turning daily coffee into meaningful change. Together with 800 cafes across Australia, we helped raise over $210,000 in 2024 for homelessness initiatives. Our contributions directly support Lou's Place, providing vital assistance to women at risk in our Sydney community. Every cup you enjoy here makes a difference. Learn more

The Social Outfit

The Social Outfit is an Australian registered charity and Public Benevolent Institution with DGR-1 status, and a certified Social Enterprise, supporting refugee and new migrant women through employment in fashion. Seventhwave has been a long-time supporter and partner of The Social Outfit, employing four of their Retail Trainees. We invited Chatcha, their sewing technician and artist, to design and sew the Seventhwave Messenger Bag.

The Great Lakes Food Trail

The Great Lakes Food Trail connects local food producers with their community across the NSW Mid Coast, championing sustainable and ethical farming practices.
